A cold front was situated in the northwest corner of Alabama this morning and it is expected to traverse the state arriving in the southeast corner of the state around 7 pm. The front is defined by the wind shift, but the drier air and lower dew points don’t arrive for a few hours. Showers were isolated this morning and will probably stay that way. A few post frontal showers remain possible into the early afternoon for Central Alabama, but these should provide only light rain. But the big news is the dew points in the 50s back in Missouri which should filter into our area this evening providing us with a low on Sunday morning in the upper 50s! Now that is going to feel nice.
As best I can tell, we haven’t seen temperatures in the 50s since early June, over three months ago!!
The upper trough is gradually replaced by an upper ridge during the next few days while a surface high migrates eastward across the Great Lakes. The surface high should arrive in the Mid-Atlantic states Wednesday providing us with nice weather from Sunday through Wednesday. Lows from the upper 50s to lower 60s with highs in the lower and mid 80s. And lower humidity.
By Thursday a new trough will be moving across the northern US and will dampen the ridge somewhat. This trough should drag a front into the area in the Friday-Saturday time frame – probably more toward Saturday – with a small chance for showers. Not much change to the highs and lows for the latter part of the week with lows in the 60s and highs in the mid 80s. Dare I say we might have seen the last of the 90s?
Tropics are still active, but the good news is that nothing is threatening the US mainland. Leslie continues to plague Bermuda as a tropical storm and Michael is way out there. The weak disturbance in the Gulf is likely to be absorbed into the cold front moving through Alabama today. A new area of disturbed weather off the African coast is not likely to develop into a storm in the next couple of days.
Interesting to note and I really did not focus on this much in the video, but SPC has a moderate outlook for the Northeast US. Kind of unusual to see that level of severe weather. While the main threat is severe thunderstorms, isolated tornadoes are possible.
Looking into voodoo country, the GFS shows another deep trough over the eastern half of the country at the end of September which suggests more cool and dry weather. Let’s see, lower humidity and cooler air – they work for me!!

I was hoping for a bit more rain today since we will be dry for much of the coming week, but the change in air mass is going to be well received. I expect to have the next Weather Xtreme Video posted by 8 am or so on Sunday. It might be late since I’ll need to sample those cooler temperatures first hand before I do the video!! Have a great day and Godspeed.
