Nope, no one is expecting a baby, but hurricane season begins in just a couple of weeks, so I thought it timely to post a list of the names planned for use during 2008. This is especially true with the interesting solution presented by the GFS at 348 hours. I know, I know, it’s voodoo, but the GFS almost never let’s you down when it gives you something to talk about!! Perhaps that storm in the Gulf on the 348 prog will become Arthur!!
2008 Hurricane Names:
Arthur
Bertha
Cristobal
Dolly
Edouard
Fay
Gustav
Hanna
Ike
Josephine
Kyle
Laura
Marco
Nana
Omar
Paloma
Rene
Sally
Teddy
Vicky
Wilfred
Somehow Teddy sounds a little soft for a hurricane but sometimes a name can be misleading. We’ll have to see how each hurricane shapes up on its own merits.
Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. They are now maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization. The original name lists featured only women’s names. In 1979, men’s names were introduced and they alternate with the women’s names. Six lists are used in rotation. Thus, the 2008 list will be used again in 2014.
I keep waiting for a B-storm to be retired so they can add Hurricane Brian to the list!
