Interesting to see the effects of the wedge, or cold air damming, begin to wane today as the surface high continues to move slowly eastward. Also interesting to note that the inversion was not shown on the upper air sounding from BMX last night. Both of these factors combine to mean a hot Memorial Day plus the possibility of an isolated storm.
I still maintain that most of the area will remain dry and any isolated storms that do occur will probably be west of I-65. So a great day for BBQ or whatever you plan to do to celebrate the holiday. Be sure to take a moment to be thankful for all that our veterans have done for us throughout the history of our great country.
A weakening cold front will come into the picture on Wednesday. As the surface high migrates eastward shower chances will pick up on Tuesday, but I believe we’ll the best chances for showers on Wednesday. The front moves slowly through the state, so depending on where the boundary is located on Thursday, we might still see some shower chances.
Looks dry for Saturday but rain chances pick up again on Sunday with the approach of a new cold front. And that is when the whole pattern really gets interesting. This time frame is right on the verge of voodoo country, so I’m sure we’ll see some changes in the next few days. But the GFS is still – persistently – developing a tropical system around June 1st in the Northwest Caribbean. So this whole scenario is still rather iffy! The latest model solution is back to a northward trek taking what might be the future Arthur across the eastern Gulf of Mexico and into North Florida around June 4th. If this scenario is correct, Alabama would be on the dry side of the system, so I would not expect much rainfall from it. But this is pure voodoo still. The only really nagging reality at this time is the fact that the GFS has been very persistent with this feature for over a week now. Definitely a stay tuned situation for anyone hooked on weather.
That will do it for this version of the Weather Xtreme Video. I plan to do one each morning this week and have it posted no later than 8 am – usually by 7 am – while James Spann is away on vacation. I’ll also be filling in for James on ABC 3340 at 5, 6, and 10 today and Tuesday. I hope that you have a great Memorial Day. Thanks for watching. God bless.
