SAME OLD SONG: Another day of summer downpours for Alabama. Some of the heavier storms as of mid-afternoon are from Huntsville to Decatur to Haleyville, and over the eastern part of the Birmingham metro. The storms are producing very frequent lightning along with torrential rain, and are moving to the east/southeast. Temperatures are generally in the 87 to 90 degree range, but where rain is falling we are looking at low to mid 70s. Not bad for an August dog day afternoon in Alabama.
REST OF THE WEEK: The large scale pattern remains the same. An upper high to the west, a very moist airmass over Alabama (PWAT values over 2 inches). Storms rotate in a clockwise fashion around the periphery of the upper high, meaning storms that form over Arkansas and southern Missouri ultimately wind up down this way. The rain won’t be continuous, and the sun will be shining at times. But, just understand a storm is possible at just about every hour of the day or night. Like today and recent days, heavier storms will produce heavy amounts of rain, and some localized flooding issues are possible. NWS offices in Huntsville and Atlanta maintain flash flood watches for much of their county warning areas.
Afternoon highs will remain generally in the 87 to 90 degree range.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Pretty much the same story. Mixed sun and clouds Saturday and Sunday with an occasional shower and thunderstorm. Highs mostly in the upper 80s, perhaps a few low 90s sprinkled in. Very humid. And, this pattern stays intact on through early next week.
TROPICAL WEATHER: A weak tropical wave in the eastern Caribbean shows no sign of development… and the rest of the Atlantic basin remains quiet.
AT THE BEACH: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day through the weekend, with the daily chance of scattered thunderstorms. Highs around 90 on the immediate coast, with low 90s inland. Sea water temperatures are mostly in the mid 80s from Panama City over to Gulf Shores.
