Here is the latest edition of the Weather Xtreme Video from ABC 33/40 is available in the player below or via iTunes.
Northwesterly flow, several imbedded short waves, and a very moist atmosphere in place across Central Alabama should pave the wave for numerous storms today and this evening. In fact, radar is already showing a large cluster of rain from Birmingham back toward the northwest corner of the state. That cluster was moving steadily southeastward. Additional storms have developed just ahead of the larger cluster.
So today should be a mostly cloudy day and hopefully nearly everyone will get some rain. Of course, with the convective nature of these events, some spots probably will get missed. But with a good number of storms possible today with multiple rounds, perhaps those dry spots will be very isolated.
The northwesterly flow gradually changes as we get into the first of the week. As it does the atmosphere will dry out a bit resulting in a more isolated character to the storms. The heat will crank up a bit, though. I do not expect to see 100-degree readings but certainly values getting close to that in the upper 90s.
Later in the week, around Thursday, a new trough is forecast to develop in the Central US which could bring some good rain chances to Central Alabama by Saturday and Sunday. And that trough will also bring a drop in our highs at least back to the lower half of the 90s.
And the tropics remain quiet after a big spurt of activity with three tropical system in July. There is one cluster of clouds in the Central Atlantic, but conditions are not very good for development of that area.
The longer range GFS continues with the idea of keeping the main storm track well north of Alabama and keeping the heat off to the west.
