An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below and on iTunes.
We’ll be on a one-a-day schedule for the Weather Xtreme Videos for the next week as James Spann enjoys a little time off. I expect to have the video posted no later than 8 am each day.
Relatively cloudless across Central Alabama this morning and very warm with most spots running in the mid and upper 70s at daybreak. But that tranquil weather should be coming to an end later today as the remnants of Dolly descend on us as a trough moves across the Southeast states. Radar this morning showed a big area of rain just to our north and northwest, so much of us should see some rain today.
Last nights upper air sounding indicated precipitable water running nearly 2 inches, so isolated spots of heavy rain are quite possible especially since the storms will not be moving much. I think the threat for severe weather is marginal primarily because of the excessive amount of moisture in the atmosphere. But we might see a few thunderstorm warnings. And with the clouds and rain, we probably won’t see highs get much above 90 or so.
The upper trough gets by us tomorrow, so it looks like we’ll dry out for the weekend. And heat up early next week as the upper ridge moves closer. But fortunately, if the GFS is right, we won’t see the heat last very long as a new trough digs into the eastern US by Thursday reducing the ridge and edging it back west.
Tropics are quiet. I noticed an area of storms in the eastern Caribbean and we have a much weakened area in the vicinity of the Cape Verde Islands. Neither of these poses a threat for tropical storm formation for the next several days.
Longer range projections keep the eastern half of the US under a trough. I think we could easily call the summer of 2008 the summer of the east coast trough. That has been a semi-permanent feature in our weather pattern. So long range showing no signs of excessive heat and some fairly good chances at rain.
As I noted, James Spann is away on vacation, so we’ll be on a once per day schedule. I hope that you have a great Thursday and get some good rains before the night is over. Enjoy the day and God bless.
