Most all of North Alabama is now in the 40s, and we will drop into the 30s later tonight with a brisk north wind.

TURNING COLDER: Temperatures continue to fall across Alabama… here are some 3:00 observations:

Birmingham 51
Muscle Shoals 45
Memphis 40

The sky will clear late tonight, and tomorrow promises to be a sunny day with a cold start. We will begin the day around 30 degrees, and I doubt it if we make it out of the 40s. We have dropped the high for tomorrow to 49 degrees since the models most likely don’t understand the strength of the cold air to the north.

REST OF THE WEEK: Thursday remains dry, but we will need to make some changes for Friday. The 12Z GFS is farther north with the next Gulf wave, and brings rain into all of Alabama during the day Friday, and I think that is the right solution considering the pattern we are in. So, we will go ahead and insert a good chance of rain at times Friday and Friday night, with the heaviest rain once again over the southern half of Alabama.

THE WEEKEND: Cold is the word. I think some communities north of Birmingham won’t get out of the 30s Saturday and Sunday, but we will be optimistic and forecast a high in the low to mid 40s. Some hint that there will be a thin layer of moisture trapped over the Deep South, meaning a weekend with more clouds than sun. But, Saturday and Sunday should be generally dry. If anything tries to fall, it will be in the form of snow flurries. It will really feel like Christmas.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: The cold air goes nowhere, and if anything it gets deeper. The entire week looks cold for the Deep South and much of the nation, and we will have to watch for a Gulf storm that just might bring some risk of snow flakes before the big day. NO, we are not forecasting a White Christmas now, but we are simply saying everything you need is in place. We just need everything to phase up at the right place at the right time. We will see.
