RIGHT NOW: Another very warm day across Alabama, but a cold front is located to the northwest, and will bring a sharp change to cooler weather just in time for the weekend. You can see the big difference along the front; in Arkansas the 2:00 temperature in Monticello (in the southeast part of the state) was 84, while the community of Rogers, in Northwest Arkansas, was at 62 with a brisk northwest wind on the other side of the front.
So far the front is rather inactive with little rain showing up; a narrow band of showers and storms is forecast to form along the front all the way from Ohio down into Louisiana within the next few hours, and SPC has a slight risk of severe weather in place for this region through tonight. A moderate risk has been placed for parts of North Indiana and North Ohio, where dynamics will be rather vigorous.
Here in Alabama, the front will be passing through sometime between midnight and 6:00… we figure any storms along the front will fizzle rapidly late tonight with weak dynamics and limited moisture. We will mention nothing more than isolated showers during the pre-dawn hours tomorrow; most places won’t have enough rain to measure.
COOLER WEEKEND: Tomorrow looks really comfortable. A sunny sky with a fresh northwest breeze and a high in the mid 70s. The GFS is printing 77, while the NAM is showing 73; the truth is probably somewhere between those values. We expect to be down in the mid to upper 40s at daybreak Sunday, followed by a high only around 70 degrees Sunday afternoon as cool air continues to settle into the state. We don’t expect any rain Sunday, but the old surface boundary to the south will be lifting north as a warm front Sunday night, and that might kick off a shower or two, but nothing widespread. All in all a very nice weekend.
NEXT WEEK: An upper ridge will build across the Southeast U.S. early next week, keeping the weather generally warm and dry. Highs could remain in the upper 70s Monday, but we will be well into the 80s each day for the rest of the week, possibly touching 90 degrees Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. All of the active weather will remain west and north of Alabama; our friends out across the Southern Plains could have a few severe storms Monday.
And, no sign of any severe weather trouble for the next 15 days. See the Weather Xtreme video for more on long range ideas.
