MOIST AIR HANGS AROUND: The weather won’t change too much through Friday… no real synoptic scale features to influence out weather. No cold fronts, upper troughs, or tropical systems. The daily placement and coverage of afternoon showers and storms are determined by mesoscale features that are almost impossible to identify far in advance, so we will broad brush the forecast with the typical late summer “partly sunny, scattered afternoon shower and storm” forecast each day for the rest of the week. Highs will be generally in the mid 80s, and most of the showers and storms will come from around 2:00 until 9:00 p.m.

OUR WEEKEND: No change on Saturday; showers and storms will remain rather scattered. In fact, watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see that the 00Z GFS actually looks pretty dry for Saturday. The high will be in the mid 80s, most likely in the 83 to 86 degree range. We will fine tune the football forecast as we get closer.

Our weather looks pretty wet now for Sunday and Monday, as deeper tropical moisture moves in from the south, and an unsettled southwest flow aloft develops. Some pretty decent rain totals will be possible on these days. The GFS continue to hint at a surface trough over the western Gulf late in the weekend, but no sign of any tropical develop for now.

NEXT WEEK: Drier air shows up by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, but not especially cooler. Still waiting on that first really good cold front of the fall season; that usually shows up toward the end of September and early October, when we get down in the upper 40s. I always look forward to that.

TROPICS: Fred could become a major hurricane in the East Atlantic during the next 36 hours, but it will not have any westward component of motion. It will drift north, weakening by the weekend. Basically a non-event for land in the middle of nowhere. The system on the mid-Atlantic coast will continue to bring windy and wet weather to the upper East Coast, but it is more of a hybrid system, not a classic warm core tropical storm. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
