As expected, showers and storms on the radar this afternoon are very isolated. As I write this the NWS in Huntsville has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Marshall County, in Northeast Alabama, for an isolated thunderstorm there.
We will maintain the risk of those isolated showers tonight as an upper low to the west slowly approaches, but most of the really active weather will remain west of Alabama. We do note that parts of South Mississippi and much of Southeast Louisiana is under a severe thunderstorm watch now.
TOMORROW/SATURDAY: A few scattered showers and storms are possible on both days as the weakening upper air feature moves just north of here. Don’t expect too much rain, however… the NAM extraction through 84 hours shows only 0.34″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is a little wetter at 0.61″. The showers will be “hit and miss”; hopefully your front yard will see one or two decent showers along the way. Other than the scattered showers the weather will remain warm and muggy with highs generally in the low 80s.
And, for those of you with outdoor activities planned Saturday, the sun will be out at times and the showers and storms should be rather brief where they form. Not a wash-out at all.
SUNDAY: Showers should begin to thin out as an upper ridge begins to build across Alabama and the Deep South. The latest GFS MOS is showing 82 for Birmingham on Sunday afternoon.
NEXT WEEK: The upper ridge is the story; while a few rogue afternoon showers are not out of the question, much of the week looks dry and warm with afternoon temperatures well into the 80s.
