RIGHT NOW: Flash flood warnings are in effect for Chambers and Tallapoosa Counties until 4:45… earlier this afternoon several roads around Camp Hill had to barricaded due to flooding. And, at this moment, extremely heavy rain continues over parts of West Alabama as well from near Aliceville to Moundville to Pondville. The largest mass of rain is south of a line from Clanton to Auburn, where the flooding problems have developed.

All of this rain is purely tropical, meaning lots of rain can fall in a very short amount of time as the PW is now over 2 inches on the morning sounding from the Shelby County Airport.

BIG SOAKING THIS WEEK: No real change in our thinking for the rest of the week; each day looks very wet with periods of rain and thunderstorms. The NAM is printing 1.35″ of rain for Birmingham during the next 84 hours, while the GFS remains wetter with 1.70″. Both models are struggling with the tropical nature of this situation, and we figure rain amounts of 3 to 5 inches are likely through Friday. Don’t forget, some Alabama communities have already received two inches of rain this morning.

I still don’t expect major flooding issues, but based on the radar, and the rich moisture in place, a few more flash flood warnings can be expected at this time week where heavy downpours develop. Severe weather should not be a problem, although SPC holds on to low end tornado probabilities for the southwest part of the state, closer to the surface low that is near the Texas/Louisiana border this afternoon. That low should be close to the Mississippi River by the time tomorrow, and it will just hang around there through Friday keeping Alabama on the wet side of the system.

WEEKEND PEEK: We still believe the showers thin out over the weekend, but we sure can’t rule out at least a few showers Saturday and Sunday. And, still nothing to sweep out the moisture across the Deep South through early next week. Keep those umbrellas close by.

TROPICS: Yep, Freddie is dead, just a swirl of low clouds in the middle of the Atlantic; the rest of the tropics remain very quiet, despite the fact that this is normally the busiest part of the hurricane season.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. Tonight, the topic is the tropics, with Rob Lightbown, the principal at Crown Weather, which specializes in the tropics. The show should be posted by 11:00.

I had a great time visiting with many of the younger residents at Mountain View Hospital in Gadsden today… and I especially thank one of their employees for sharing an old picture of one of my associates; you will be seeing that one the blog shortly.
