We are in an active weather pattern these days and this bodes well for Alabama in at least one way.
It means we get more frequent visits by everyone’s favorite weather word now–rain!
Good rain event coming up tonight. The main action at mid-afternoon was a line of moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms from West Tennessee down across North and West Mississippi into South Louisiana.
The NWS Storm Prediction Center posted another Tornado Watch–this one includes SE Louisiana and Extreme South Mississippi. Sich cities as:
Baton Rouge
New Orleans
Biloxi
Gulf Port
Pascagoula
Bay St. Louis
The SPC also maintains a slight risk for about the south half of Alabama overnight. A lot of this dpends on how much rich moisture-laden and unstable air the Gulf of Mexico can ship us.
At 2 pm, temperatures had moderated into the 50s across the state except upper 40s in the NW corner. Down near he coast, it was a mild 63 in Mobile. Dew points (a key indicator of moisture) were in the very low 20s over the north, 30s central and 40s south. We need dew points closer to 60. It was 57 in Mobile but a very dry 18 at Fort payne.
LAKE WIND ADVISORY
NWSX Birmingham maintains that all night and until 4 o’clock tomorrow morning. Sustained winds of 20-30 mph with some gusts to 35 out of the east and SE, will shift around to the west after midnight. (Cold front moves through)
SLEET NW ALABAMA?
NWS/Huntsville advises that rain may start off in NW Alabama as sleet or a sleet/rain mix. This includes Lauderdale, Colbert and Franklin Counties. As the air warms ahead of an approaching cold front, it will change to all rain.
ALABAMA SITUATION AT 2:40 PM CST
Several little groups of showers around the state but the main ones were from Pickens County in West Central Alabama northward into the NW corner of the state. Moderate to a few heavy showers. Heavier ones still back in Mississippi. There is some colder air still entrenched over North Mississippi, in the 30s in some areas with a cold rain.
Stay tuned all night.
