MUGGY WEATHER CONTINUES: A tropical airmass will linger through the weekend, so we will have to dodge mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms again today and tomorrow. Upper air winds are light, so storms that form will produce heavy rain, much like recent days. And, the best chance of a shower or storm will come from around 1:00 until 8:00 p.m. Otherwise, we will have a partly sunny sky today with highs in the mid 80s before the afternoon storms set in.

OUR WEEKEND: No real change on Saturday, although the GFS continues to hint that showers and storms could be a little fewer in number. But, we expect an increase in showers and storms Sunday as a surface wave approaches from the southwest. This wave will originate in the western Gulf; I don’t think it becomes an organized tropical system, but it will bring lots of moisture, and the potential for a really good rain event is there on Sunday and Monday of next week. It might mean two inches of rain, maybe even more in spots.

NEXT WEEK: After a wet day Monday, showers should become fewer in number Tuesday, and much of Alabama will be rain-free on Wednesday and Thursday as an upper trough forms over the eastern U.S., and the deep moisture pushes east of Alabama.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school football games across Alabama tonight and tomorrow night, the chance of any one stadium seeing a shower or thunderstorm is about one in four, and the best chance of a shower will come during the first half of the games. Kickoff temperatures should be in the upper 70s, falling slowly into the mid 70s by the fourth quarter.

On Saturday, Alabama will host Florida International at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa at 6:00 p.m. The sky will be mostly cloudy, and there is a chance of a passing shower or thunderstorm during the game. The temperature will be close to 80 degrees at kickoff, dropping into the mid to upper 70s by the end of the game. Auburn will also at 6:00 p.m. Saturday against Mississippi State at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with very similar weather conditions. A shower is possible during the game; the temperature will fall from near 78 at the kickoff to 75 by the final whistle. UAB hosts SMU Saturday afternoon (3:00 kickoff); a thunderstorm is possible with a kickoff temperature close to 83, dropping into the upper 70s by the fourth quarter.

TROPICS: Hurricane Fred peaked in intensity yesterday as a category three storm; he will slowly weaken through the weekend in the East Atlantic as the system moves very slowly northward around 35W. No threat to land.
