SUN AND STORMS: A classic summer mix across Alabama this afternoon. The stronger storms as I write this are over Cullman and Blount Counties; others have formed across the Birmingham metro area and other scattered pockets across the state. Birmingham has dropped to 83 degrees due to a nearby shower, but where the sun is shining, the heat is on. Tuscaloosa is at 96 degrees with a heat index of 102; Alabama’s hottest spot at 3:00 was Dothan with a blistering 101 degrees. The storms will diminish once the sun sets later this evening since most of them are driven by the daytime heating process and the resultant buoyancy.

HEAT RIDGE WEAKENS A BIT: Understand our weather will be hot and humid for the foreseeable future, but temperatures will back down a bit through mid-week as the upper ridge weakens, and we see a general increase in the number of scattered showers and thunderstorms each afternoon. Highs will be generally in the 90 to 93 degree range tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday, and the chance of any one spot getting wet will be about one in three.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Unfortunately the ridge grows stronger, and we go back into the mid 90s by Friday and the weekend, and the number of afternoon showers will diminish as well. Basically this weekend looks very much like the last weekend… the heat will be the story.

LONG RANGE/VOODOO LAND: Check out the Weather Xtreme video and you see the GFS develops a long wave upper trough over the eastern U.S. late in the month, but we all know about this voodoo; that will probably vanish on future runs.

TROPICAL UPDATE: The tropical wave in the Central Atlantic has not gotten better organized today, and it now looks like winds aloft will become rather harsh as it approaches the Caribbean, and the odds of this becoming a significant tropical system are growing smaller. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.
