Late this morning, showers in Alabama were confined mostly to the NW and extreme north. Specifically from about Marion and Winston Counties northward to the Decatur/Huntsville area. These were light to moderate showers with little or no lightning indicated.
Our main focus now shifts westward where widespread rain was occurring across North Mississippi, North Louisiana, South Arkansas and extreme NE Texas. The stronger storms were over NW Louisiana. All of this activity was moving slowly eastward.
The NWS/Shreveport has issued about 5 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings since 7:00 this morning, but they have also issued 5 Flash Flood Warnings in the same time period. The rain continues to come down in big amounts. Those warnings are for areas of NE Texas and NW Louisiana.
A TORNADO WATCH is in effect until mid-afternoon for Extreme NE Texas and NW Louisiana. This includes the Shreveport area.
There is a chance that, as the stronger storms reach North and Central Alabama this afternoon and evening, we may see a few thunderstorms become severe. The NWS/Storm Prediction Center has the entire north half of the state outlookied for a Slight Risk for severe weather. Also, don’t be surprised to see some Flash Flood Warnings later today or tonight.
There is a good chance that 1 to 2 inches of rain will occur between now and daybreak Wednesday and locally heavy rain again Thursday and Friday and into part of the weekend. Some of our computer guidance indicates as much as 4 to 5 inches of rain between now and Sunday morning over NW Alabama and around 3 inches in places like Tuscaloosa, Jasper and Birmingham.
