“No matter how much you think you have prepared yourself – through education, through communication with people – life provides surprises. My daughter has a disability. I was not prepared for it. It was a surprise for me. I know how much harder she has to work in life to prove that she is intelligent. She has a heart and loves just like everyone else loves. She has a charismatic personality. She has the ability to touch everyone. Even the grumpiest person that you meet, she could put a smile on their face. I want people to know that she aspires to be someone in life. She wants to be a doctor to help other people. She may not look like all of us because she needs a device to help her walk long distances, but she has dreams just like everyone else. I want her to know that as long as she works hard, she can do anything that she wants to do and she does not have to accept ‘no.’ She can always go to the next door and somebody will open the door for her.” – Ericka Phillips Poe of Jefferson County, with her daughter CatLynn Poe, 12.
