Arctic air continues to roll southward taking aim on Alabama and this is going to bring us some big temperature changes overnight.
WHERE IS THE COLD FRONT?
Just before 9 o’clock tonight, the leading edge of the arctic air was passing through Tupelo in NE Mississippi. The wind will be shifting to the NW up in the Florence-Huntsville area before midnight and into the Birmingham area well before daybreak. In fact, the Birmingham temperature should be near freezing by the time you wake up tomorrow morning.
Rain occurred over most of the state late today and this evening. Tonight the west-central part of the state was getting a break, but some more rain will accompany the cold front and linger after it passes. There may be some snow flurries up in NW Alabama soon after midnight. There is a chance we will have some flurries as far south as I-20 (Tuscaloosa-Birmingham-Anniston) before the precipitation ends Sunday morning. We do not see any travel problems.
Sunday is going to be one of the most uncomfortable days so far this winter. Up in the Tennessee Valley in places like Florence, Huntsville and Scottsboro, the temperature will not get much above freezing. In the Birmingham metro area we are still calling for a high around 38 or 39, but the wind is going to bite you harshly. NW winds could gust as high as 30 mph.
Some of the weather models were projecting a low for Birmingham Sunday night and Monday morning of 13 to 15. In our updated forecast later tonight in the Sunday edition, we will probably stick to our original 18 or 19 for a low. Monday should be dry and mostly sunny.
