A band of virga (light rain not reaching the ground) and sprinkles extends from Huntsville to east of jasper to Tuscaloosa. The precipitation gets a little heavier (but still just light) along I-59 southwestward through Greene and Sumter Counties.
The rain begins to reach the ground more as you head westward along I-20 and changes to snow by the time you reach Jackson.
This precipitation will continue to spread northeastward into West Central Alabama before midnight, changing over to light snow.
It will start to affect areas in the middle of the state (Tuscaloosa, Demopolis, Clanton, Birmingham) between midnight and 3 a.m.
Then it will move into East Alabama.
A band from Demopolis to Selma to Calera to Clanton to Alex City, to Gadsden/Anniston/Centre will be te most likely area to get up to an inch of snow. A winter weather advisory is in effect for these areas.
The accumulations will be mainly on elevated surfaces and grassy areas.
Travel problems are not expected across Central Alabama, but be alert if snow starts to fall a little more heavily, because bridges could beome snow covered in short order.
A coating will fall from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Oneonta and across the Montgomery and Auburn areas. South of that, the precipitation will fall as rain.
A few flurries will fall over Lamar, Fayette, NW Walker, Marion and Winston Counties.
This is not a major winter storm, but we are issuing a French Toast Warning for Saturday morning across much of Central Alabama. (Apologies to Brad Huffines.) Buy plenty of bread, eggs, milk and syrup for French Toast tomorrow morning!
We will be monitoring the skywatcher and weather service reports all night.
