Earlier this afternoon, the Storm Prediction Center posted a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 8:00 tonight for five counties in NW Alabama, including Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Marion and Lamar. Since that time, the Watch has been extended southward and also included now are Fayette, Pickens, Green and Sumter.
There are two lines of thunderstorms in East Mississippi poised to move into West Alabama. For a time a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was in effect for Lamar County. Some of the stronger storms that we are watching at this time were beginning to move into Pickens County with others approaching Green County. Further north some more strong storms will be moving into extreme NW Alabama. These storms will not weaken until after dark and even then some will linger much of the night. We will watch everything closely.
As it stands at midafternoon, Severe Thunderstorm Watches are in effect for these areas:
West Tennessee
A good part of Mississippi
Extreme West Alabama (9 counties)
North half of Louisiana
Extreme NE Texas
Also in East Texas, a Tornado Watch was posted and for a time Tornado Warnings were in effect for several counties in NE Texas.
