Conditions are ever so slowly improving in the wintry weather area across North Alabama early on this Thursday morning.
Radar at 3:30 am showed that the snow area has become smaller and limited mainly to the Tennessee Valley from Florence all the way over to Scottsboro.
This recent report from 3340 Skywatcher “Weatherjames” in Huntsville: “Up to 1.25 inch of snow has accumulated but it has now changed over to a mix of sleet and freezing rain. Temperature 32. Up to 2 inches of snow in North madison and Limestone County. Numerous wrecks throughout Madison County”
Also in Huntsville, WAAY-TV reports 1.5 inches of snow on Monte Sano before changing to sleet.
Precipitation is widespread this morning but along the I-29 corridor it is mostly rain…a cold rain.
It is encouraging to note that the Birmingham temperature has been steady at 34 for the last three hours, It should start a slow rise later this morning.
It appears that the Greater Birmingham Area will escape without significant problems from this wintry weather, but it may be wise to watch closely some of the higher elevated bridges and overpasses this morning as you drive to school or work.
Our Skywatcher in Tuscaloosa reports a present temperature of 35.6 and no ice problems. In Fayette, 34 with no problems and 0.52 rainfall since midnight.
