Just before 7 p.m., skies are mostly cloudy across North and Central Alabama. A cold front is over eastern and southeastern sections of the state.
Behind the front, temperatures were quickly falling into and through the 30s.
Light rain was falling over eastern Alabama, over parts of Calhoun, Cleburne, Clay and Randolph Counties. More substantial rain showers were over Southeast Alabama from Lanett down to Covington County…where some heavier showers were happening. Radar even indicated the possibility of some small hail there…but no lightning. Cloud tops in that area up to about 20,000 feet according to the Maxwell radar.
Over Tennessee…light snow was falling at Nashville, Crossville and Knoxville. Snow advisories are in effect for a large part of eastern Tennessee, including the Great Smoky Mountains. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for SE Tennessee. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for parts of the North Carolina mountains, including Cherokee and Spruce Pine, with a Snow Advisory for Asheville and Brevard.
Regional radars show a good bit of snow over Middle and Eastern Tennessee as well as Central and Eastern Kentucky. Some scattered snow flakes were showing up over western Tennessee and extreme northern Mississippi.
Some light snow could affect the more mountainous terrain of NE Alabama around Jackson County tonight, but the most the rest of us can expect are a few snow flurries, so nothing measurable is expected.
It will be cold overnight, with lows falling into the middle to lower 20s by morning, under clearing skies. Winds will stay up out of the northwest, averaging some 10-20 mph, making it feel quite colder.
Sunday promises to be a mostly sunny, breezy and cold day with highs only in the lower 40s. But take heart, warmer weather is ahead, with readings near 60 by Monday afternoon. We might even see 70s by Thursday and Friday.
But I want to give you an early heads up to the possibility of severe weather next Saturday. A dynamic storm system looks like it will be affecting Alabama and we may deal with the threat of severe weather then. We will have plenty of time to watch it.
