The small area of light rain that was developing along the Mississippi-Alabama border around midnight, spread out to cover a bigger area.

At 3:30 this morning, there was a mix of light rain and drizzle covering a fairly wide band across Central Alabama roughly from Cullman on the north to Clanton on the south. This included the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham-Anniston-Gadsden area. Movement was toward the east.

We don’t have any recent reports of sleet but there could be a little of that mixed in also. Here are some spots reports at 3 am:

43 cloudy in Tuscaloosa
41 cloudy in Huntsville and Decatur
37 cloudy in Gadsden
38 light rain at Birmingham Airport
37 cloudy in Anniston
39 light drizzle at Alexander City

Over to our east, colder air is beginning to spread westward into Extreme East Alabama from Georgia and the Carolinas. (the old wedge-effect) These temperatures at 3 am (CST)

33 light drizzle in Atlanta
33 in Athens
32 in Gainesville
near 32 across much of South Carolina

If there is any ice in Alabama this morning, it should be mainly over on the eastern side of the state and mainly in the higher elevations. At 3:30 am, atop Mt. Cheaha, Alabama’s highest point (2407 feet) it was 31 degrees with a wind chill of 23.

TRAVELING EAST TODAY?
If so check the latest weather. Freezing rain may be an issue in places like NE Georgia, South Carolina and part of North Carolina including Greenville, Spartanburg and Charlotte.

Back for another power nap. Look for the morning video discussion by James Spann by around 6 am or so…and we will have other updates as well.
