MORE SHOWERS LATER TODAY: A very moist airmass remains in place across our state this morning, with PWAT (precipitable water) values as high as 2.1″. This means the heavier storms this afternoon will drop lots of rain in a very short amount of time, and some localized flooding issues are possible. The NWS office in Huntsville maintains a flash flood watch for their counties up in the Tennessee Valley.

The overall synoptic pattern remains the same. An upper high is west of here, over Texas, and large thunderstorm areas form on top of the heat bubble around Kansas and Missouri, and those rotate in a clockwise fashion around the periphery of the high, and wind up bothering us here in Alabama from time to time.

We note some serious flash flood issues this morning over parts of southern Missouri, and we will watch that MCS (mesoscale convective system) as it moves in our direction.

REST OF THE WEEK: No large scale changes… we will need to mention scattered to numerous showers and storms each day through Friday. The sun will be out at times, but rain will come at times. And, unfortunately there is no skill in telling you exactly when the rain will start and stop at any one given location. While most of the showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, we sure can’t rule out a late night or morning thunderstorm. Highs in the 87 to 91 degree range.

OUR WEEKEND: You guessed it… pretty much the same setup. Mixed sun and clouds Saturday and Sunday with the continued risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs 87-91. And, that will stay in place into early next week as well.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected through Friday.

AT THE BEACH: While scattered storms are always possible on a summer day on the Gulf Coast, we figure they won’t be quite as numerous as the northern half of Alabama. About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day from Panama City over to Gulf Shores, with afternoon highs on the immediate coast around 90 degrees. The sea water temperature this morning at buoy 42012, just south of Orange Beach, is a warm 87 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
