Saturday proved to be our hottest day so far for 2012 with the Birmingham airport reaching 94 degrees while Tuscaloosa and Anniston reached 95 degrees. The 95 at Anniston was a new record for them. The upper ridge will be holding strong as it comes under siege by the closed low ejecting out of the Rockies. And Beryl will be pushing slowly westward, too, helping to break the ridge’s grip on the Southeast US.
Beryl gained a little strength yesterday, but is still projected to come ashore at tropical storm strength. Projected landfall is in the vicinity of Jacksonville, FL, later tonight or early on Monday morning. Clouds will be invading Alabama from Beryl today, but it appears likely that most if not all of the rain will stay to our east. NHC brings Beryl into South Central Georgia before the trough moving across the Great Lakes begins to turn the system back today the east and northeast. Beryl is expected to diminish to a tropical depression after coming ashore but will likely regain tropical storm strength after emerging back into the Atlantic on Wednesday as it moves away from the US coast.
For us, the heat will be on again today though the presence of clouds especially along the eastern border could hold highs down a few degrees. As the ridge breaks down, temperatures should fall off a tad as we head into the upcoming week.
The strong trough coming out of the Rockies will dampen the big ridge giving us a little relief from the heat. It looks like we stay a bit unsettled through much of the upcoming week until a trough comes out of the Rockies in the Thursday/Friday time frame. This should provide us with the best shot at showers for much of the area. The trough is forecast to move through the area on Friday just in time to give us a nice weekend. Looks like highs could be down to around 80 or so with lowered humidity, too, which will help it feel much nicer. Certainly a brief cool down as we hit the beginning of what we call meteorological summer.
Rainfall will be quite heavy along the Southeast US coast while we remain mostly dry until around Thursday and Friday. Rainfall then could be around a half inch for most locations.
The upper ridge is expected to return around the 6th, so the cool down will be short-lived. However, the GFS now has an interesting look around the 11th with a nice closed low over the Great Lakes with general troughiness across the eastern US. That is certainly a welcome sign for keeping the heat away, so we’ll be watching that to see of that trend continues in future model runs.
