THIS AFTERNOON: A disturbance in the northwest flow aloft over the Southeast U.S. is producing a few echoes on radar over Northwest Alabama this afternoon, but dewpoints are in the 20s, and that precipitation won’t make it to the surface. Otherwise, the sky is partly to mostly sunny with temperatures mostly in the low and mid 50s. A pretty decent warm-up after a very cold start this morning (scroll down for a list of morning lows from J.B.).
TOMORROW THROUGH SUNDAY: We will enjoy a slow warming trend through Saturday; the high tomorrow will be close to 60, followed by low to mid 60s Saturday afternoon. Tomorrow will be generally sunny, but another clipper type system will bring some clouds to the state Saturday, and we will maintain some risk of sprinkles over North Alabama Saturday afternoon or evening. Nothing significant due to the very dry air, and most places won’t have enough rain to measure. Then, much colder air returns to the state on Sunday with a high in the mid to upper 40s along with a chilly north wind.
SEC CHAMPIONSHIP: As always, we can promise no rain and light wind for the game, which is this Saturday in Atlanta pitting Auburn against South Carolina. But, outside the Georgia Dome, clouds will increase during the day in Atlanta Saturday with a high around 60. A few sprinkles are possible Saturday night, but nothing really significant. Sunday will be dry and colder with a high in the 40s.
ARCTIC BLAST NEXT WEEK: The coldest air so far this season rolls in here Tuesday and Wednesday. We will have a very hard time getting out of the 30s on these days, and the low early Wednesday will be close to 20 degrees, with readings in the 15 to 19 degree range likely for the colder valleys. Then, a slow moderating trend is expected Thursday and Friday. The week looks dry, so no winter weather mischief to worry about; just the very cold air. It will clearly be the coldest air so far this season.
LONG RANGE IDEAS: The weather continues to look cold through mid-month, although the 12Z GFS hints at a warmer pattern after December 15. The ECMWF paints a very wet weather system here around December 11, followed by another cold air blast. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
