WARM MARCH DAY: Temperatures are mostly in the low to mid 80s across Alabama this afternoon… so far no new records. The average high for Birmingham on March 27 is 70. The air is dry, and the sky is mostly sunny as a strong upper high over the Gulf of Mexico remains the dominant weather feature. The sky will remain mostly fair tonight with a low in the 60s. CALMER WEATHER: After a stormy night, Alabama’s weather will improve today as dry air returns. The sky will be mostly sunny with a high in the mid 70s. Dry weather continues tomorrow and Friday with warm afternoons; we project highs in the 82-86 degree range both days. Some some places it will be the warmest weather so far in 2020. Look for sunshine in full force tomorrow, followed by a partly sunny sky Friday. Continue reading
Strong/Severe Storms This Evening; Dry Air Returns Tomorrow
QUIET AFTERNOON: The big band of rain and storms that produced some flash flooding issues over the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama this morning has moved north of the state, and most of Alabama is dry this afternoon… we note just a few isolated showers over the northeast counties of the state. Temperatures are in the upper 70s and low 80s, and we await a cold front coming in tonight that will trigger strong to severe thunderstorms. Continue reading
Strong/Severe Storms Possible Late Today/Tonight
ACTIVE WEATHER: Showers and a few thunderstorms are moving northeast across Alabama early this morning as a warm front lifts northward; heaviest rain is over the northwest part of the state. The middle of the day should be fairly quiet, but we have potential for strong to severe thunderstorms over the northern half of the state late this afternoon and early tonight. SPC has defined a slight risk (level 2/5) of severe storms as far south as Millport, Birmingham, and Jacksonville… a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) is up down to Greensboro, Clanton, and Roanoke. Continue reading
Strong/Severe Storms Possible Tomorrow Evening
WET MONDAY: Rain, mostly light to moderate, continues across parts of North/Central Alabama this afternoon. The sky is cloudy, and temperatures are mostly in the 60s. On the positive side, SPC has removed the “marginal risk” of severe thunderstorms for today and tonight. Rain will diminish this evening, although a few scattered showers could linger through the night. Continue reading
Unsettled Through Tomorrow Night; A Few Strong/Severe Storms
STORMY START: Rain and thunderstorms are moving through the northern half of Alabama early this morning; the storm produced hail and strong winds over parts of Fayette and Walker counties. As I write this they are weakening as they move into the Birmingham metro. Additional showers and storms are likely today, and by this afternoon the stronger storms will be over the central counties of the state, where SPC has defined a low end, “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms.
