Unsettled Through Tomorrow Night; A Few Strong/Severe Storms
STORMY START: Rain and thunderstorms are moving through the northern half of Alabama early this morning; the storm produced hail and strong winds over parts of Fayette and Walker counties. As I write this they are weakening as they move into the Birmingham metro. Additional showers and storms are likely today, and by this afternoon the stronger storms will be over the central counties of the state, where SPC has defined a low end, “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms. Rain At Times Through Tonight; Dry Tomorrow
RADAR CHECK: Showers cover much of North and West Alabama this afternoon; we note a few thunderstorms over the Tennessee Valley, but they are well below severe limits. Still, SPC maintains a low end, “marginal risk” of severe thunderstorms for North Alabama through the evening hours. There could be a stronger storm with small hail and gusty winds, but the overall risk is very low as the main dynamic support is lifting far to the north of Alabama. Continue reading

ANOTHER QUIET DAY: Temperatures will rise into the 78-83 degree range across most of Alabama this afternoon with a mix of sun and clouds. We can’t rule out a few showers, but they should be few and far between. The average high for Birmingham on March 19 is 68. Continue reading
Only Isolated Showers Through Tomorrow; Cooler By The Weekend
RADAR CHECK: We have a few small, isolated showers on radar across Alabama this afternoon, otherwise the weather is dry with a mix of sun and clouds. Temperatures are well up in the 70s; a few spots have reached 80 degrees. Any showers tonight will remain few and far between as the really active weather remains well to the west of Alabama. Continue reading
Showers Remain Few And Far Between Through Tomorrow
CALM PATTERN THROUGH TOMORROW: Not much change in the Alabama weather situation over the next 48 hours. While showers are certainly possible today and tomorrow, they should be very widely scattered. Otherwise, look for a mix of sun and clouds both days with a high between 77 and 80 today, followed by low 80s tomorrow. The average high for Birmingham on March 18 is 67. Continue reading
Widely Scattered Showers Through Thursday
RADAR CHECK: As expected, showers are very widely spaced across Alabama this afternoon. We are seeing a few showers in a band from near Marion to Goodwater to Roanoke at mid-afternoon; they are moving slowly eastward. For the rest of the state, we have a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures mostly in the 70s. Showers will remain isolated tonight; the sky becomes mostly cloudy. Continue reading
Warmer With Only Spotty Showers Through Thursday
QUIET MARCH PATTERN: While a few showers will show up from time to time, the mid-week period looks pretty quiet for much of Alabama as an upper high over the Gulf of Mexico continues to nose into the state from the south. Look for a mix of sun and clouds today and tomorrow with just a few widely scattered showers; temperatures rise into the mid 70s today… by tomorrow afternoon we will be pretty close to 80. Thursday will be mostly dry, and most likely it will be the warmest day so far this year with a high in the low to mid 80s. Continue reading
