Rain Chances Increase Later This Week
RADAR CHECK: As expected, showers are almost impossible to find across much of North and East Alabama this afternoon, where dry air is in place. We do have scattered showers and thunderstorms south of a line from Millport to Calera to Auburn; they are drifting slowly to the south and will dissipate after sunset. Temperatures are generally in the low 90s this afternoon. Continue reading
Best Chance Of Storms South And West Of Birmingham Today
A FEW STORMS LATER TODAY: A drier airmass is over Northeast Alabama today, so showers should be very hard to find there. Best chance of scattered storms this afternoon will be from Birmingham south and west, where deeper moisture lingers. Otherwise, today will be a typical hot August day with a partly sunny sky and a high in the low 90s for most communities. Continue reading
Active Storms Over Central/South Alabama
RADAR CHECK: Most of the showers and thunderstorms across Alabama at mid-afternoon are over the southern half of the state; they are producing heavy rain, gusty winds, lots of lightning, and some small hail as they move east… Continue reading

Showers/Storms Tomorrow; A Drier Weekend
TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Not much change in the weather situation tomorrow; the sky will be occasionally cloudy with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. The high will be in the mid to upper 80s, below average for mid-August in Alabama. Then, the upper trough will move east of Alabama tomorrow night, and the weekend will be considerably drier thanks to sinking air motion. Continue reading
Scattered To Numerous Showers/Storms Later Today
UNSETTLED THROUGH TOMORROW: A broad upper trough is forming over the eastern U.S. today, and will make the air more unstable across Alabama. This will mean scattered to numerous showers and storms over the next 36 hours… most of them coming from 12:00 noon until 10:00 p.m.. but late night or morning shower is possible as well. A few showers are forming over East Alabama as I write this around 6:00 this morning… mainly over Calhoun, Cherokee, and DeKalb Counties. Continue reading
Unsettled Weather Through Friday
RADAR CHECK: Showers and storms are becoming numerous over the northern half of Alabama this afternoon… heavier storms are producing strong gusty winds, heavy rain, and lots of lightning as they move northeast. Continue reading
Shower/Storm Coverage Headed Higher
RAIN CHANCES UP, HEAT LEVELS DOWN: The upper ridge across the Deep South will weaken in coming days, making the air more unstable, and opening the door for an increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms across Alabama. While most of the rain will come from roughly 1:00 until 11:00 p.m… we can’t rule out a late night or morning shower as well. In fact, we have a few showers over West Alabama early this morning as I write this discussion. Continue reading
Showers/Storms To Increase In Coming Days

MUST BE AUGUST IN ALABAMA: Not much change in the weather situation today across Alabama; lots of sun this morning, followed by temperatures rising into the 90s this afternoon helping to generate a few random, scattered thunderstorms during the peak of the daytime heat. The chance of any one spot getting wet this afternoon is about one in three, and most of the storms will form between 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. The high will be in the 93-96 degree range for most communities.
