Potential For Record Warmth This Week

HOLY HIGH AMPLITUDE: A very high amplitude upper air pattern is setting up over the continental U.S. this week… a very cold upper trough will be over the western states, but we will be influenced by a strong upper high over the east. This will set up blowtorch warmth over the eastern and southern states this week, with potential for record warmth. Continue reading →

Colder Air For North Alabama; Some Rain At Times

A cold front will enter North Alabama later today, setting up a big thermal contrast across the state. If you are in places like Muscle Shoals, Huntsville, Scottsboro, Hamilton, Haleyville, Cullman, or Fort Payne, temperatures will be falling through the 50s today, potentially winding up in the upper 40s by mid to late afternoon with a north breeze. Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston, and Gadsden will remain in the 60s through early afternoon, but temperatures will fall into the 50s late in the day as winds veer around to the north. Very Mild; Only Isolated Showers Today

SPRING PREVIEW: The overall upper air pattern across North America won’t be changing anytime soon. A strong upper ridge over the Gulf of Mexico is the main player for us, meaning mostly cloudy days, mild temperatures, and some risk of showers for the foreseeable future. Any showers today across Alabama should be pretty isolated, and we might see some breaks in the cloud cover this afternoon, pushing temperatures into the 70s. Continue reading →

Not Much Sun Through The Weekend

RADAR CHECK: Rain is falling this afernoon over the Tennessee Valley of far North Alabama, back down into the northern half of Mississippi. Otherwise, the sky is mostly cloudy across Alabama this afternoon with temperatures generally in the 60s. Continue reading →

Mild Temperatures; A Few Showers

Today will be mostly cloudy and mild, and we will continue to mention a chance of showers, with the best coverage north of I-20. The high today should be in the mid to upper 60s. Not much change tomorrow; another mostly cloudy and mild day with a shower possible, but not especially likely, as an upper ridge over the Gulf of Mexico noses in here from the south. More Clouds Than Sun; A Few Showers

THIS AFTERNOON: We have some temporary clearing this afternoon in a rather irregular zone from near Birmingham to Mobile, but the rest of the state remains generally overcast. Where the sun is shining, temperatures are well into the 60s, but where clouds are hanging tough temperatures are in the 50s. Nothing on radar at mid-afternoon. Continue reading →

Clouds Hang Around; Not Much Rain Today

THIS MORNING: Temperatures have changed little across Alabama over the past 18 hours. We have mostly 40s over the northern half of the state, but Dothan reports 61 degrees just before daybreak. They are south of a stalled surface front, representing the leading edge of shallow, cold air that covered North and Central Alabama yesterday. The front will dissipate today, and temperatures won’t be as cold. We will reach the 50s by afternoon, and some places will see low 60s, mainly along and south of I-20. Continue reading →
