Warmer Days Ahead; A Few Showers
OVERCAST, COLD AFTERNOON: Most guidance from computer models suggested we would reach the 50s today across North/Central Alabama, but that won’t happen as thick clouds and cold air advection combine to keep temperatures in the 40s. A cluster of showers is moving into the Birmingham metro around 3:00 p.m. as I write this update. Continue reading
Cooler Today; Not Much Sun This Week
ON THE MAP: We have a sharp cold front lined up from near Heflin to Montgomery to Jackson this morning; this will bring a sharp temperature contrast to Alabama today. North of the front, we are seeing low to mid 30s over the Tennessee Valley, but to the south Auburn reports 61 just before daybreak. And, on radar, we see a few patches of light rain in the colder air over the northern quarter of the state. Continue reading

RAW, COLD AFTERNOON: As expected, temperatures have been steadily falling across Alabama this afternoon, and some communities have reached the upper 30s over the northern quarter of the state. Some patchy light rain lingers over Central and South Alabama, but the storms we dealt with early this morning are long gone. Clouds cover all of our state now, but we expect clearing tonight as dry air works in. Continue reading

LOUD EARLY MORNING STORMS: A band of thunderstorms with torrential rain and gusty winds has been moving through North/Central Alabama early this morning… heaviest rain is now south of I-20.
Heavier rain will push into the southern half of the state in coming hours, where SPC maintains a “marginal risk” of severe thunderstorms. The main threats are from gusty thunderstorm winds and small hail; the tornado threat is very low, but not zero. Continue reading
