Dry Though Friday; Cool Days, Chilly Nights
CALM PATTERN: Following yesterday’s rain, drier, cooler air is rolling into Alabama today. The sky will be partly to mostly sunny with a high in the mid 50s; Birmingham’s average high for January 23 is 54. Continue reading
Rain Moving Out; Dry Air Moving In
RADAR CHECK: Most of the rain in Alabama this afternoon (at 3:00) is east of a line from Anniston to Clanton to Selma to Grove Hill. SPC maintains a “marginal risk” of severe storms for Southeast Alabama through the evening hours, but the overall threat is very low. And, the sky is clearing behind the rain over parts of North and West Alabama… Continue reading
Strong Storms Today; Dry For The Rest Of The Week
The main threat will come from gusty thunderstorm winds; the tornado threat is very low, but not zero. One good thing is that the storms are ahead of schedule, meaning there will basically be no surface based instability available over the northern half of the state this morning. Highest severe weather threat will be over the southern half of the state this afternoon, but even there the overall threat is fairly low. Continue reading
Warming Trend Continues; Rain Returns Monday
FEELING BETTER: Temperatures have exceeded 50 degrees across much of North/Central Alabama this afternoon as the warming trend continues. While the sky is sunny here, we do note some clouds just west of the state. Continue reading
Warm-Up Through The Weekend; Wet Monday
We are expecting a very nice warm-up today; with ample sunshine the high will be in the low 50s, almost at seasonal averages for January 19 (Birmingham’s average high today is 54). Continue reading
Warming Trend Though The Weekend
SEVERE CLEAR: Not a cloud in the Alabama sky this afternoon, and we can celebrate the fact that all observation sites are above freezing at 3:00… Continue reading
Slow Warming Trend Begins Later Today
We finally climb above freezing today; most North/Central Alabama locations will see a high around 40 degrees. Still, about 15 degrees below average for mid-January, but certainly moving in the right direction. The air is dry and the sky will stay sunny. Continue reading
Another Frigid Night; Warmer Days Ahead
SUB-FREEZING AFTERNOON: Temperatures are mostly in the 20s across Alabama this afternoon; the average high for Birmingham on January 17 is 54. At least the sun is shining brightly as dry air has moved into our state after a messy 24 hour period of snow and ice. Visible satellite imagery shows the snow cover nicely. Continue reading
Sunshine Returns, But Below Freezing Today
The winter weather advisory for Southeast Alabama will be cancelled soon as the snow ends and the sky clears. Today will be sunny but cold, most of North/Central Alabama will remain below freezing all day, and a brisk northwest wind of 10-20 mph will make it feel colder. Hopefully the sun, wind, and dry air will help with the sublimation/evaporation process, but some secondary roads will probably stay icy through tonight, especially where heavier snow came down yesterday and last night. Continue reading
Light Snow; Hazardous Driving Later Today
Snow will likely melt on roads as it begins, but with temperatures falling well down in the 20s today, there is a high probability of a very quick freeze, creating a glaze of ice, making driving difficult, if not impossible in some places. There is some similarity to the January 28, 2014 “Snowmageddon” event. Not saying today will be as bad, but the setup is not that different. Continue reading
