Winter Storm Watch Tomorrow
DRY, WARMER TODAY: Before we get into the specifics about the snow situation for Alabama tomorrow, today will be a mostly sunny day with a warmer afternoon; we project a high around 50 degrees. This actually could be a bad thing; the pavement/asphalt surfaces will retain some of this heat, leading to a potential problem tomorrow. Snow will fall on the warmer surfaces tomorrow, leading to melting, but with very cold air in place tomorrow (we will be in the 20s most of the day), we could see a “flash freeze” type situation that could put down a thin base of ice on road surfaces. Continue reading
Frigid Weekend; Snow Possible Next Tuesday
COLD/LIGHT SNOW: As advertised, cold, Arctic air has returned to Alabama, and radar shows some light snow continuing over the northern half of the state. We have reports of flurries as far south as Livingston and Demopolis. A winter weather advisory continues for the far northern part of Alabama, up in the Tennessee Valley, where icy travel is possible tonight. The counties in the advisory are Franklin, Colbert, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, and Jackson… Continue reading
Back Into The Deep Freeze
TEMPERATURES ARE PLUNGING: As I write this update around 6:30 this morning, the Arctic front is near I-65… to the west temperatures have dropped into the 30s with a strong northwest wind, but East Alabama is mostly in the low 60s. Rain showers continue in many places; they will end later this morning. Continue reading
Winter Weather Advisory Far North Alabama
FEELS LIKE SPRING: Temperatures have soared into the low 70s in some spots across Alabama this afternoon, mainly where there have been breaks in the overcast. On radar some rain is falling over the western side of the state, but nothing too heavy or widespread. Showers will increase across Alabama tonight, ahead of a very sharp Arctic cold front now over western Arkansas. Some thunder is possible, but there is no risk of severe thunderstorms. Rain amounts overnight should be in the 1/2-3/4″ range for most places. Continue reading
Warm Today; Back In The Deep Freeze Over The Weekend
BIG CHANGES AHEAD: We project a high in the low 70s today, almost 20 degrees above average for January 11, and not far from the record high of 78, set in 1949. Quite the contrast to the weather on this date in 1982, when Birmingham dropped to -1F, one day before a crippling ice storm started. Continue reading
Near 70 Tomorrow; Arctic Blast For The Weekend
ONE MORE MILD DAY: Temperatures are mostly in the 60s across the great state of Alabama this afternoon; the sky is mostly cloudy and showers are few and far between. Tomorrow will be another mostly cloudy and very mild day; the high will be in the 67-70 degree range and we will mention the chance of a few passing showers. Some thunder is possible tomorrow night as a cold front approaches, but there is no risk of severe storms. Continue reading
Mild Through Tomorrow; Falling Temps Friday
SHORT TERM WARMTH: We project a high in the mid 60s across North/Central Alabama today, about 10 degrees above average for January 10. The sky will be mostly cloudy, but any showers should be few and far between. Upper 60s are possible tomorrow with a few passing showers likely as our thaw continues, but don’t get used to the mild weather. Continue reading
Mild Through Thursday; Arctic Blast For The Weekend
TOMORROW/THURSDAY: We project a high in the mid 60s tomorrow, and by Thursday we rise into the 67-70 degree range. The air will remain fairly moist, and we will mention a chance of scattered showers both days with a mostly cloudy sky. Nothing too widespread or heavy. Continue reading
