Thanks to Jason Simpson, J.B. Elliott, Bill Murray, Ashley Brand, and Brian Peters for allowing me a week off. It was welcomed and appreciated.
Getting back in the routine this afternoon looking at weather and getting back on the grid… looks while I was away temperatures remained below average for early August… highs this month:
August 1 90
August 2 87
August 3 91
August 4 93
August 5 85
August 6 89
August 7 91
August 8 92
That makes for an average high of 89.75 degrees, which is really pleasant for the hottest part of the summer. Looks like we stay below average this week with increasing chances for showers and storms as we roll along.
We are also doing just fine in the rain department, with Birmingham now reporting a surplus of 3.48″ for the year.
TROPICS: Looks like an uptick is likely across the Atlantic basin in coming weeks; it is about time. The wave in the eastern Atlantic looks good, and could become a tropical depression in coming hours or days. The Saharan Dust Layer is mostly well to the north of this one, so it certainly has a chance. Most of the models take this one northwest, where there is decent potential for recurvature into the open Atlantic without it becoming a threat to land. Other waves will follow that need to be watched, along with “back yard” type activity in the Gulf and the Caribbean.
I will have a complete discussion and fresh Weather Xtreme video posted by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. I have a busy week ahead with many appearances, including one Tuesday at Mississippi State University in Starkville for their annual Broadcast Meteorology Program summer workshop. You know lunch will follow at Little Dooeys…
