Winds have carried smoke from the Georgia/Florida wild fires into the Birmingham area this morning. At-risk groups (children, the elderly, and people with heart and lung diseases) are urged to take precautions for the rest of the day: stay inside and no heavy exercise or work.

Added note…I do not remember wild fire smoke from outside the state of Alabama having this much impact on our area. Back in 1952 and again in 1954, there were numerous woods fire across Alabama and visibility was reduced by smoke in many sections of the state. Even some of the hourly airport aviation weather sequences were including a smoke restriction due to woods smoke instead of industrial smoke. –JBE
