Partly sunny skies across much of the area this afternoon are leading to increasing instability and the development of small but increasingly numerous pop corn showers in long curved rows across Alabama and eastern Mississippi.

These showers are capable of brief heavy bursts of rain.

As they begin to grow in size and mergers occur this afternoon and evening, I am afraid that we are looking at additional incidents of very heavy rain with the potential for flooding. Lightning will also be a problem with the thunderstorms that form.

Be alert to prolonged periods of heavy rain. These showers can dump an inch of rain or more in 20 minutes as we have seen. Areas that have already received heavy rains will flood easily. A flash flood watch is in effect for the northern two thirds of Alabama until 7 a.m. CDT.
