BLUE SUMMER SKY: As expected, this has been a very pleasant day for late June in Alabama thanks to a very dry airmass that has settled into the state. At 3:00… Birmingham was still in the upper 80s (89) with a dewpoint of 61 and a relative humidity of 38 percent. The dewpoint at Tuscaloosa was only 55, something you don’t see too often this time of the year. We also note temperatures are below statistical guidance, as expected, due to the good soil moisture from the recent rain.

HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Expect more of the same tomorrow and Saturday. Sunny days, fair nights, and low humidity values for summer. Highs should be mostly in the mid 90s, but it won’t feel too bad thanks to those low dewpoints. MOS guidance remains too hot.

Moisture levels will creep up Sunday and Monday, and on these days we will need to mention the risk of ” widely scattered afternoon thunderstorms”… but nothing really widespread. Highs hold in the mid 90s, and the best chance of a storm will come from about 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. I don’t think there will be any widespread rain issues for Monday night fireworks displays across our state. All in all a very decent Fourth of July weekend.

AT THE BEACH: Nice weather there too. About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day with a few widely scattered storms. Highs along the immediate coast will be close to 90, with mid 90s inland. Ocean water temperatures remain very warm; the water was 89 degrees at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab at 3:30 this afternoon.

ARLENE IS INLAND: Tropical Storm Arlene will dissipate over North Mexico during the next 36 hours, producing lots of heavy rain as far north as the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. The rest of the Atlantic basin remains very quiet for now.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
