THIS AFTERNOON: There are scattered showers and storm across the Deep South this afternoon; some of the stronger ones are over East Mississippi, in the general area where cooler air is colliding with the hot air that was parked over Alabama yesterday. In Alabama, most of the showers are over the eastern counties of the state, but those are moving west, and we will maintain a chance of scattered showers and storms through the evening hours. As expected, the day is much cooler. Birmingham is reporting only 79 degrees at 2:00… the warmest place around here is Tuscaloosa with 86.

REST OF THE WEEK: Our cool-down won’t last long… afternoon temperatures will rise back into the 87 to 90 degree range tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday. And, while a shower is possible each afternoon, they will be very widely spaced, and many places will be dry.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: A weak surface front will drift down this way, and could bring a few showers and storms to the northern half of the state Friday night. Then, on Saturday, the best chance of showers will be generally over the southern half of the state, as dry air invades North Alabama. Sunday and Monday look generally dry with only a small risk of a shower during the afternoon hours. It now looks like highs over the weekend will be generally in the mid 80s, exactly where we should be in late May in Alabama.

TROPICAL WEATHER: It looks more and more like the broad low in the Atlantic, east of the Georgia and the Carolinas, will not become a tropical storm; NHC indicates only a 10 percent chance of development there. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet for now. The hurricane season officially begins on June 1.
