RIGHT NOW: As expected, we have an increase in the number of showers and storms across Alabama this afternoon. Some are pretty healthy, producing very heavy rain, lots of lightning, and areas of strong winds. So far, most of the storms have been below severe limits in the classic sense, but SPC maintains a slight risk of severe weather across North Alabama for the rest of this afternoon into the evening hours. One very nice storm is sitting over our studio in Riverchase, with temperatures down in the upper 70s with the clouds and rain.

TOMORROW: We will maintain a good chance of showers and storms tomorrow, but they will be dropping south, and by afternoon most of the storms could be over the southern half of the state with the sky becoming partly sunny over North Alabama as drier air moves in by afternoon.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Still looks like areas from Birmingham north and west will be mostly dry on these days, with a chance of showers and storms continuing along and south of a line from Anniston to Selma to Mobile. Afternoon highs will be close to 90.

THE WEEKEND: The 12Z GFS has come in a little drier for the weekend, but we will still mention some risk of scattered showers and storms both days with a partly sunny sky. Highs will remain close to 90 degrees.

TROPICS: Looks like tropical depression 2 is really having a hard time with the dry air around it in the eastern Atlantic; it looks pretty disorganized on satellite images this afternoon. If it can survive the dry air, it has a chance of moving all the way across the Atlantic, and perhaps becoming a risk for the South Atlantic coast in about 8 days. The 06Z and 12Z GFS actually move this thing across the southern tip of Florida before turning northward along the southern Atlantic coast. Of course, this is all voodoo at this point. See the Weather Xtreme video for the latest graphics and full details. The two waves ahead of TD2 will have a hard time in the short term due to harsh upper air winds ahead of them.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. I had a great time today as usual speaking at the summer broadcast meteorology program workshop at Mississippi State in Starkville. An impressive crowd, and a great lunch from Little Dooey’s. Doesn’t get much better. Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow…
