WET AT TIMES: The old tropical low, formerly known as tropical depression five, is making the second landfall in it’s short life this morning over Southeast Louisiana. The low will move northward, up the Mississippi River, and then slowly turn to the right over Tennessee, keeping Alabama in a very moist, unstable environment for the rest of the week, meaning the daily risk of scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. The chance of any one spot getting wet today is in the 40 percent range, with percentages going up into the 50 to 60 percent bracket tomorrow and Thursday.
Like recent days, the stronger storms will produce very heavy amounts of rain, and they can linger well into the nighttime hours. NEXRAD data suggests some parts of Cherokee County had over 4 inches of rain last night, and there were some flooding issues around the county.
HEAT LEVELS DOWN: Birmingham has gone 43 consecutive days with a high of 90 or higher, but that streak is in some danger. With clouds and showers, we expect highs in the 88 to 91 degree range tomorrow and Thursday.
WEEKEND OUTLOOK: The tropical low will be gone, but moist air stays in place, meaning a mix of sun and clouds Saturday and Sunday with the chance of scattered showers and storms both days. Highs should be in the low 90s.
TROPICS: Other than the tropical low over Southeast Louisiana, the rest of the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet. We do note the GFS shows two tropical systems in the Atlantic, east of the U.S. in the medium range (7 to 16 days out), with both recurving into the North Atlantic before reaching land. This, of course, is voodoo, but the idea of increased tropical activity is more than likely correct.
