COLD MORNING: Vic Bell, our Skywatcher in the northeast part of Etowah County in the hamlet of Scrougeout (about 15 miles northeast of Gadsden) reports 27 degrees this morning with a “frost bigger than any snow I’ve had in several years”. Among the official reporting stations, Tuscaloosa is at 29, while Birmingham is a sub-freezing 31. We will run down a long list of lows later this morning if we can get J.B. away from the Thanksgiving leftovers. For many places this is the coldest morning so far this season.

FINE DAY FOR FOOTBALL: We will enjoy a cobalt blue sky today with dewpoints remaining in the 20s. Perfectly clear weather today for the Iron Bowl at Auburn; we project 55 degrees at 1:30 when the game begins, with the temperature falling into the 40s during the second half as the sun goes down. Tonight will be cold for the high school football playoff games; with a clear sky temperatures will be in the mid 40s at kickoff, then falling into the 30s by the fourth quarter of the games. You will need a warm jacket. Then, tomorrow at Legion Field, UAB will host Central Florida at 12:30. Lots of sun during the game with temperatures in the comfortable 60 to 65 degree range.

TOMORROW AND SUNDAY: We stay dry through Sunday. We expect another freeze early tomorrow, but a warming trend follows with highs in the mid 60s tomorrow, and upper 60s Sunday. Some high clouds will begin to arrive Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: Still looks like the western U.S. system will arrive in two parts. We will deal with the first round of rain on Monday, followed by a second rain day on Wednesday. Both days should offer potential for around 1/2 inch, for a weekly storm total of 1 inch. The air will be cool and stable on both days and severe weather is not expected. The weather looks dry on Thursday and Saturday. For the following weekend (December 5/6), Saturday would be dry, but rain and storms will arrive Sunday. But, we all know that is in voodoo land for now.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

I hope you are having a great Thanksgiving holiday; we remain on a holiday schedule with one Weather Xtreme video per day. Brian Peters will have the videos tomorrow and Sunday; we go back on the two a day routine Monday….
