HOT HAZY EARLY SUMMER WEATHER: The early summer heat rolls along unabated. I should point out that while meteorological summer started on June 1, the summer solstice is still over a week away… this year it comes at 12:16 p.m. on June 21, the day of the year with the most daylight.
The overall pattern won’t change through the weekend… hot hazy days, highs in the mid 90s, and widely scattered showers and storms around each afternoon. The placement and coverage of the afternoon storms is always a mystery, nobody knows where they will form until they actually get on radar in the early afternoon hours. It is all a matter of the highest moisture axis, small scale features like outflow boundaries, temperatures aloft, etc. The synoptic scale maps don’t help all that much.
NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues the idea of the core of the heat ridge drifting west… which could open the door for a northwest flow type MCS (mesoscale convective system) at some point during the week, and those might even arrive at night. But, otherwise, we might see a general increase in the coverage of afternoon showers and storms, but they remain scattered. Afternoon highs back down a bit into the low 90s with the higher heights off to the west.
TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is quiet; a broad low near Cuba is drifting north, but tropical development is unlikely due to harsh upper air winds over that region.
AT THE BEACH: Standard summer weather continues through early next week from Panama City west to Gulf Shores. About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day with widely scattered storms around. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with 90s inland. The ocean water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab early this morning was 84 degrees.
