Looks like we will be somewhat chilly for the next week or so along with an active period of weather. But for the short term, we’ll be dry. And we could use a good soaking since most of us got cheated out of very much rain on the system yesterday.
A little patchy fog was occurring across Central Alabama this morning, but that should dissipate fairly quickly and it was not widespread. We should see a good deal of sun today but temperatures will only reach the mid 60s for highs. Tomorrow, with a reinforcing shot of cold air, will struggle to reach the 60-degree mark even with good sunshine. This will be a bit below what you might normally expect in early November.
Then as we get into Tuesday and on toward the later part of the week we have what I would best describe as an unsettled pattern. A cold front should settle into the area on Tuesday bringing some chance of rain. As the trough deepens off to the west, the flow aloft becomes southwesterly, so the front stalls out in our area. This should keep us unsettled with rain chances each day through Friday.
By Friday the upper trough deepens and moves eastward sweeping the precipitation out of Central Alabama. This could pave the way for some pretty chilly air for the weekend. But confidence is not very high since the model solution spread is pretty large.
There is some risk of severe weather west of here on Sunday and Monday and there is still a question as to whether or not we’ll see anything strong on Thursday and Friday. Right now with confidence low we’ll maintain a watch and see attitude. But remember that November is our secondary severe weather season, so we will want to be watching closely.
The longer range GFS forecasts suggest a return to milder weather as the main storm track heads back north for much of the following week.
And what about the tropics? Paloma has become quite a storm achieving Category 4 status – a rare event for November storms. Unfortunately, it looks like the storm center will move very close to the Cayman Islands before coming ashore in Central Cuba. This will be the fourth tropical system this season to strike Cuba. But just as the storm has strengthened rapidly, it appears likely that increasing shear over the Bahamas will cause a rapid weakening of Paloma after it crosses Cuba.
