Hold on, folks, only another relatively few hours of the brutal cold before we see recovery back to what we typically see for temperatures around the middle of January. Today will be another cold one, but the afternoon highs should recover to just slightly above freezing.

It will be another cold start for the day Monday, but with lots of sun we should see highs climb into the 40s for the first time in several days. A quick moving short wave will dampen the temperature recovery on Tuesday as another shot of cold air arrives. However, while it slows the recovery, we should still get back in the 40 to 43 range. Since there will be little moisture with that short wave, the most I expect to see is some clouds.

By Wednesday and Thursday we come under a ridge in the upper atmosphere, so I expect to see us hit the 50s for highs for the latter part of the upcoming week. That should surely feel like a tropical heat wave in light of the brutal cold which has held a long grip on the Southeast US. While it might feel like a heat wave, temperatures will actually only be back at or slightly above what we usually see in the middle of January.

A strong trough/closed low in the southern stream promises some rain for the weekend. I think Friday becomes a transition day with clouds increasing. The main rain event should fall on Saturday. This appears to be a fairly potent storm system with a strong low in the Gulf of Mexico. This could be one of those systems that produces a major severe weather event for the Florida Peninsula. SPC is not outlooking a specific area yet in their 4-to-8 day outlook, but their discussion focuses on this system.

Looking further into voodoo country, there is no sign of additional outbreaks of extreme cold. But the trend is for a relatively active southern stream with another wet down around the 23rd and fairly warm weather with a southwesterly fetch for the 25th-26th.

Sorry for the lateness this morning. I actually overslept for the first time in months. Maybe the cold is taking its toll on me since the bed felt so good this morning. James Spann should be up next first thing tomorrow morning – if he doesn’t oversleep – with the next Weather Xtreme Video. Have a great day and Godspeed.
