Central Alabama is waking up to another cold morning, but the temperature readings this morning are not quite as cold as we saw yesterday morning. And I’ll take a 10-degree improvement any day when it is this cold. But that does not apply to the eastern sections of Alabama along the Alabama-Georgia line where temperatures were registering the coldest just before dawn.
Clouds entered our picture last night – and interfered with the viewing of the International Space Station (ISS) for residents of Central Alabama. And the clouds hung around much of the night especially across west and central sections of the state. So I expect to see a mixture of sun and clouds today, but the afternoon temperatures should climb to near 40 for most locations.
The next few days will be a roller coaster on clouds and temperatures as the long wave trough manages to maintain a hold on the eastern half of the country. There is a chance of rain tonight and early Sunday with the approach and passage of a strong short wave that will once again bring another shot of cold air. As is typical in the Southeast US, it is an issue of timing. Right now it appears that the moisture arrives with temperatures warm enough for rain. As the cold air gets here Sunday the moisture exits limiting the area north of I-20 to the possibility of snow flurries. South Alabama is likely to get the most rainfall with one half to one inch possible there.
Chilly weather stays with us Monday and Tuesday. Another impulse travels by early Tuesday and may give us clouds and perhaps another shot at some snow flurries – but still not major winter event is expected.
The latter half of the work week will be characterized by strong moderation as we head back toward temperatures more typical of this time of year. A fast moving short wave in the upper flow promises to increase moisture and rain chances on Friday with the bulk of the rain out of here by Saturday morning.
The last week of January which is well into voodoo country promises to be not as cold which may feel downright warm after this latest cold spell. Plus the GFS is suggesting a big storm around the first of February which could bring some serious rain with it. But I’m certain that solution will probably vary since it is way out there.
