If you were up around sunrise in the northeastern part of Alabama this morning, you probably saw temperatures in the 30s!! Yes, I said 30s. Morning readings at Cullman and Fort Payne dropped into the 30s – Gadsden came close with an observed reading of 41. So quite a cool start to the day for many areas, but no record at Birmingham where the temperatures only dropped into the lower 50s. This is the morning we will need to remember when we get into July and August when morning lows stay in the 70s. Maybe remembering this morning will help us feel cooler.
Dry remains the by-word for the weather in Central Alabama. A surface high pressure system will settle in across the Southeast US for the next several days with a ridge in the upper atmosphere. Another high northeast of us at mid-week will help to set up a possible wedge pattern which may help to take a few degrees off our highs by Wednesday and Thursday.
By Thursday and Friday there appears to be enough moisture return to mention the possiblity of showers. We need a real drought buster, but it seems that all we are going to get in the foreseeable future will be the scattered showers. This won’t break the drought, but any rain will be welcome to the few who get it.
While the main westerlies stay well to our north, a cold front is forecast to approach Central Alabama on Friday and Saturday. The latest GFS model run does not show the front making it here, so it seems that scattered showers is about all we can expect.
Trolling out into the longer range also known as voodoo land there is a new look to the overall pattern with a trough over the western US and a ridge over the eastern US. This unfortunately does not bode well for any significant weather system and rain!
So enjoy the cool morning today and perhaps one more nicely cool morning – store these in your memory banks for future heat relief. I’m off to the Do Dah Day parade this morning – I was appointed a judge a few years ago, and I found out later the appointment is only revoked upon death, so I’ll join the other distinguished judges in reviewing the parade entrants.
