THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR: I must admit I love this time of the year. I know it aggravates some folks seeing Christmas decorations out already, and some of my affiliate radio stations around the nation are already playing non-stop Christmas music. But, I say bring it on. November and December are special, and represent great memories from years gone by. I am thankful the weather is calm as we begin the month, because as we all know things tend to get a little rough around here during November and the first half of December, our fall tornado season.

DRY THROUGH SUNDAY: A fresh surge of cool, dry air arrives tonight, so highs tomorrow will be a little cooler, mostly in the mid to upper 60s with a nice north breeze. We are still projecting an average low of 39 early Friday, with potential for a light freeze across the cooler valleys. We warm right back into the 67 to 70 degree range Friday afternoon.

Weekend afternoons will be mild with highs in the low 70s. Saturday will be another sunny day, and Sunday will remain dry, although some clouds could show up by afternoon as moist air begins to return.

NEXT WEEK: We will go ahead and introduce the chance of showers on Monday and Tuesday with moist air moving into Alabama from the Gulf. There is no well defined trigger for rain, so it probably won’t be too heavy, and we don’t expect any severe weather, but some rain is possible at times both days. For Wednesday through Friday, for now the chance of rain looks small, but moisture will hang around, so a shower or two is not out of the question on those days. Highs next week will be close to 70 most afternoons.

HELLO IDA: Tropical depression 11 is in the Southwest Caribbean, and is being upgraded to Tropical Storm Ida as I write this; watch the Weather Xtreme video for all of the graphics and detailed info. It will move across Central America tonight and tomorrow, emerging back into the western Caribbean by Friday. Some of the global models bring Ida up into the southern Gulf this weekend, but others leave it meandering around the western Caribbean through early next week. Remember, water temperatures in the northern Gulf are very cool (mid 60s), so the farther this goes, the weaker it will get. If it stays down in the deep tropics, it has a chance to become a hurricane at some point with warmer water in place down there. We will keep an eye on it.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 14 at the BJCC during the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years). We encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply cannot get enough training. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good seat. We had a packed house last year.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

I had a great time today visiting with the 6th graders at Berry Middle School in Hoover, and I enjoyed lunch with a large group of realtors at the Realty South 10-K drawing in The Preserve. Be looking for those kids from Berry on the Pepsi KIDCAM today at 5:00 on ABC 33/40 News. The next Weather Xtreme video will be posted here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow…
