Russellville 52
Concord 55
Scrougeout (Northeast Etowah County) 55
Gadsden 57
Coker 57
Tuscaloosa 58
Anniston 59
Birmingham Airport 59
At 59, Birmingham is within two degrees of the record low for August 24 of 57, set in 1997.
J.B. will have a full list of lows posted later this morning…
THE DAYS AHEAD: Expect a slow increase in heat and humidity on a daily basis through the rest of the week, this is August, you know. We will be close to 90 by mid-week. No significant chance of rain through Thursday. By Friday, however, enough moisture will be in here for some risk of scattered showers and storms.
THE WEEKEND: The 00Z GFS is not very aggressive with moisture over the weekend; in fact it hints that much of the weekend will be dry with highs in the upper 80s and only isolated showers. An approaching cold front will bring a better chance of showers and storms by Monday of next week.
LONG RANGE: Still no sign of any extreme heat… sure looks like the summer of 2009 will be remembered for below average temperatures, above average rain, and no triple digit heat.
TROPICS: Bill is becoming an extra-tropical storm over the North Atlantic; it will skirt the United Kingdom at mid-week. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet; a disorganized area of storms east of the Leeward Islands is facing hostile upper air winds. Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you can see good evidence the latest MJO pulse is over, and things could stay calm across the tropical Atlantic for a few weeks.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. We will record a new show tonight… Tonight’s guest WeatherBrain will be Dr. Ivor van Heerden, the former Deputy Director of the LSU Hurricane Center and an expert on coastal Louisiana. He will talk about what went wrong and why during Hurricane Katrina. The show should be posted by 11:00…
