TRENDING TOWARD DRY WEATHER: Let’s say up front that it is hard to totally rule out some risk of an afternoon shower this time of the year (this is the first day of July, after all), but the weather sure looks generally dry for the northern half of Alabama through early next week.
The dewpoint at Muscle Shoals and Decatur is down to 63… pretty low for summer, and that air continues to drop slowly southward. Birmingham’s dewpoint is still 71 this morning at 5:00, but we figure that will be dropping during the day. We won’t mention rain in our formal forecast today, but you might see a blip or two on radar this afternoon around I-20; anything out there should be very widely spaced. The best chance of showers and storms today will be over the southern half of the state.
TOMORROW THROUGH MONDAY: We are on the cusp of a holiday weekend, and we will leave a dry forecast in place for Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, and Gadsden. Afternoon highs will be very close to 90, and the main threat of showers and storms will stay south of U.S. 80, or south of a line from Demopolis to Montgomery to Opelika. Very odd not to mention the risk of “scattered, mainly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms” in the forecast the Fourth of July weekend, but we will go in that direction for now.
WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: A deep layer of tropical moisture continues to cover the coastal region from Panama City west to Gulf Shores. We expect only about 2 to 4 hours of sunshine each day through Sunday, with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. Unfortunately this unsettled weather pattern will continue into next week.
TROPICS: Alex is inland; landfall was around 8:30 last night about 125 miles south of Brownsville, Texas. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet, but we will need to watch the northern Gulf for some “backyard” development next week. The GFS keeps pressures low near the Gulf Coast, and lots of rain from New Orleans eastward.
