RIGHT NOW: A rather quiet day so far in the weather office; we have a few scattered showers in progress this afternoon, but nothing really heavy, and nothing widespread. The day is warm and humid with most places up in the mid 80s.
TOMORROW: I really don’t expect much change in the weather tomorrow; we will have a mix of sun and clouds with a chance of a few scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be up in the mid 80s again; a few degrees above average levels for late September in Alabama.
THE WEEKEND: We will continue to forecast a good chance of showers and storms on Saturday with an upper trough giving us better dynamic lift. It won’t rain all day, but a few strong storms are possible, and a heavy downpour or two is likely allowing some risk of localized flooding problems. Then, drier air moves in here late Saturday night, and we have dropped all mention of rain on Sunday, when the sky should be partly sunny with a high in the low to mid 80s.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: The chance of any one high school football stadium getting wet tonight and tomorrow night is about one in four, with the best chance coming over the western half of the state. We recommend taking rain gear just in case, but it looks most most stadiums will be dry, especially tonight. Temperatures will be in the upper 70s at kickoff. Saturday, Alabama will host Arkansas at 2:30 p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Showers and storms are likely during the game with a kickoff temperature near 80 degrees. Then, Saturday evening Auburn will host Ball State at Jordan-Hare Stadium at 6:00 p.m. Rain is likely at times during the game with a kickoff temperature in the mid to upper 70s. And, UAB is at Texas A&M Saturday night for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff; the weather at College Station will be mostly cloudy with only a slight risk of a shower during the game. The temperature should be in the low 80s at kickoff.
NEXT WEEK: A secondary front will push through Alabama on Monday; the air at this time looks too dry for any significant chance of rain, so the day looks partly sunny. Then, a nice surge of cooler air will arrive Monday night, and will set the stage for excellent early fall weather Tuesday through Thursday. Morning lows will be down in the 50s, with some potential for upper 40s across North Alabama’s cooler pockets at daybreak Wednesday. Looks like the next chance of rain will come at the end of the week, Friday October 2, or on Saturday October 3.
TROPICS: A wave has emerged off the coast of Africa, and will be monitored for any signs of development. If anything happens to form out there, most likely, it will turn north into the open Atlantic and not be a problem for any land area.
