TODAY: Light rain is falling across parts of North and Central Alabama this morning, and we will maintain a good chance of a few showers and storms today as a surface cold front approaches from the north. Severe weather looks pretty unlikely here today with rather limited instability values for summer; SPC’s severe weather risk runs from the northeast tip of Alabama, around Mentone, all the way up to Boston. Additional rain amounts of 1/2 inch look likely today, and the rain should be over by this evening as the dry air begins to take over.
VERY NICE WEEKEND: You won’t get a weekend nicer than this one in mid-summer in Alabama. Mostly sunny days, clear cool nights, and low humidity levels. Looks like we will be down around 60 tomorrow, Sunday, and Monday morning, with potential for one or two record lows along the way. Here are the record values in coming days…
July 19 60 (1967)
July 20 58 (1984)
July 21 60 (1947)
Highs over the weekend will be in the mid 80s, well below average values for the mid to late part of July.
NEXT WEEK: We stay dry Monday and Tuesday, but deeper moisture moves in from the southeast at mid-week, and a few showers could show up by Wednesday. Thursday and Friday look relatively wet with deep moisture in place and a chance of scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms.
TROPICS: See the Weather Xtreme video; there is a wave out in the eastern Atlantic around 32W (southwest of the Cape Verde Islands), but the chance of development looks rather small at this point with marginal SSTs and dry air ahead of the system. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
AT THE BEACH: Only about 1 to 3 hours of sunshine today and tomorrow along the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores with a good chance of showers and storms. The dry makes it all the way down to the beaches tomorrow night, and Sunday and Monday look excellent with sunshine in full supply and lower humidity. Highs today and tomorrow will be in the mid 80s, followed by upper 80s Sunday and Monday. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was a very warm 89 degrees
